ACNL’s Environment of Practice Committee has created a standard of practice for the health care work environment and an instrument to measure this standard. This comprehensive instrument will help you assess your work environment on an organizational, departmental and/or team level. The Healthy Work Environment (HWE) Assessment Instrument is the culmination of more than two years work by the dedicated members of the Environment of Practice Committee, led by Committee Chair Tim Gilmore. 

 

The goal is to improve job satisfaction, organizational commitment and nurse retention. The overall standard, composed of nine separate standards, was derived from the voices of nurses at all levels of practice. In addition, statements related to environment of practice from eight professional nursing organizations were reviewed. These organizations were:
